New Year Tarot Spread: 7 Cards to Map Out Your Year Ahead

Doing a tarot spread for the New Year is a ritual I’ve practiced ever since I learned to work with tarot.

I’ve tested different spread layouts over the years, and today I’m sharing one of my absolute favorites. It allows you to both reflect on the year that’s passed and look at what the year ahead holds energetically.

Four main themes are explored. They correspond to the four main energies:

The mental realm, or Swords in Tarot,
The material realm – abundance, finances, health and energy levels – the Suit of Pentacles,
Emotions and relationships, the Cups,
And projects and passions, with Wands.

Reading Tarot at the New Year helps me reflect on my priorities and set realistic goals for the year ahead.

Using Tarot or oracle cards also makes it easier for me to articulate my goals and, more importantly, why I want to achieve them.

The process helps me tune in to my inner knowing, to complement and deepen what my “rational brain” already knows… or think it knows.

I take notes that I keep carefully. Throughout the year, I return to my document to check in: what goals did I set? Are they still my goals? Am I on track? I also reflect on what’s present now versus what was present then – not to judge myself, but simply to notice what has shifted.

This spread has become my favorite for the New Year because it helps you understand how the energies will position themselves in the coming year across the main areas of your life.

The Cards reveal what’s on my mind, what I may be looking forward to or what I might be afraid of – not fortune-telling predictions, but a reflection of what’s already present within me.

This is a 7-card spread. You can use it to read for yourself or to read for someone else, even if you’re relatively new to Tarot.

Find about twenty minutes of quiet time. You might want to light a candle or create a calm space – whatever helps you focus. Shuffle your deck, take a breath, and let’s begin.

Card 1: The Year That Just Passed, In Summary

This Card captures the essence of the year behind you.

More specifically, it shows what you’re carrying forward from this past year into the next one. It might be an energy, a memory, or a lesson learned. Whether positive or challenging, this is what’s in your psychological “backpack” as you step into the new year.

Card 2: What You’re Hoping For in the Year Ahead

You probably have multiple hopes and goals for the coming year. This Card helps you identify which one is most present in your mind right now.

If you pull a Major Arcana Card, it might represent a broader theme or aspiration. A Minor Arcana Card often points to something more specific – a particular project or goal.

If it’s highlighting one specific aspiration, ask yourself: Why is this one front and center? Is it something you’ve been putting off? Does it require something or someone you didn’t have before? Sometimes the timing simply wasn’t right until now.

Card 3: Your Mental State and Mindset for the Year Ahead

This Card shows the mental patterns likely to be active for you this year. What themes will occupy your thoughts? What will you be thinking about regularly?

It can also point to an area where you’ll need more clarity or where you might need to “wake up” to something you’ve been avoiding seeing.

Card 4: What I Need Mentally

This Card covers material concerns – money, yes, but also what gives you a sense of security and stability. Abundance means different things to different people.

When you look at this Card, tune in spontaneously. Your first interpretation is usually the most accurate.

Note: If you pull a Card that feels “negative” or difficult, it’s pointing to a block or challenge – something you have the power to work on or change.Security

Card 5: Your Relationships and Emotional Lifeow to Give Myself That

This Card explores the relational and emotional side of the coming year. What emotions might be present? Which relationships will be important? How will you communicate with the people who matter to you?

Card 6: Your Projects and Creative Energy

This Card shows where your energy and motivation are likely to focus this year. What will you be driven to accomplish or create?

This Card can also hint at significant changes: a move, travel, a job change, or other life shifts.

Look at this Card alongside Card 2 to see how they connect – Card 2 shows what you’re hoping for, and Card 6 suggests where your actual energy might go. Sometimes they align perfectly; sometimes they reveal a gap worth paying attention to.

Card 7: A Guiding Message for the Year Ahead

This final Card offers guidance or advice – something to keep in mind as you move through the year. It might be very practical (“take your time,” “be bold”) or more psychological (“trust yourself,” “let go of control”).

Either way, it’s worth noting and checking in with periodically throughout the year.

Note: Again, if a Card feels challenging or difficult, it’s showing you an area to work on – not something set in stone.

Making It Work for You!

What you learn from this spread can inform your entire year. You don’t need to have everything figured out right now – the point is simply to check in with yourself honestly and see what emerges.

Come back to your notes throughout the year. Things change, priorities shift, and that’s completely normal. The goal isn’t to predict your year perfectly; it’s to create a starting point for reflection and self-awareness.

Happy New Year, and enjoy your reading!
